چکیده

The North Paci c thermocline (250m to 400m) is studied using XBT observations acquired during the 1970s and 1980s. Interannual variations (3-5 year time scales) in thermocline temperature, with O(0.1 C) amplitude at 400m, are found to exhibit westward propagation throughout the extra-tropical North Paci c up to 45N. Southwards of 30N, the features propagate intact across the basin from the eastern boundary to the western boundary. Northwards of 30N, the features can be observed to propagate only as far as the dateline. The observed midlatitude thermocline anomalies are often related to tropical ENSO events in that they occur most strongly after the development of tropical El Nino or La Nina conditions and propagate westward from near the eastern boundary in the midlatitudes. But it is found that the observed midlatitude thermocline anomalies have larger phase speeds than theoretically predicted free baroclinic Rossby waves. Also, the observed anomalies have larger wavelength and faster propagation speeds than baroclinic Rossby waves that radiate from coastal Kelvin-like waves near the eastern boundary in well-known high-resolution models. Large-scale thermocline uctuations which have spatial scale and phase speeds similar to the observations are also found in a coarse resolution model of the Paci c Ocean forced by observed wind and heat ux anomalies over the 1970-88 period. In the midlatitudes, north of 30N, large-scale Ekman pumping by interannual wind stress curl variations provides a signi cant driving mechanism for the modeled large-scale thermocline anomalies. The modeled ocean response is a combination of the static thermocline response to large-scale Ekman pumping plus a train of westward traveling Rossby waves which accounts for part of the propagating temperature uctuations. A tropical, remotely forced component is prominant near the eastern boundary, but this only contributes weakly in the model open ocean. 2 North Paci c Thermocline Variations on ENSO Time Scales

Atmosphere-ocean dynamics in the Western Indian Ocean recorded in corals.

We present a set of Porites coral oxygen isotope records from the tropical and subtropical Western Indian Ocean covering the past 120-336 years. All records were thoroughly validated for proxy response to regional climate factors and their relation to large-scale climate modes. The records show markedly different imprints of regional climate factors. At the same time, all coral records show cle...

Decadal Variability in the Terrestrial Carbon Budget Caused by the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation

The terrestrial carbon dioxide (CO2) budget interacts with the Earth’s climate system on diurnal to centennial and longer time scales, making it critical for climatic prediction and stabilization. Atmospheric observations and global syntheses of CO2 data indicate that the terrestrial biosphere is one the major sources of interannual variability, but the underlying mechanisms operating on differ...

no/Southern Oscillation and Selected Environmental Consequences

Adva ISSN http: The paper presents a review of El Ni~ no/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and selected environmental consequences at a range of spatial scales. The fundamentals of ENSO are summarized in a descriptive way, and the reader is provided with the key facts from the history of ENSO research as well as with recent developments in understanding the oscillation. Subsequently, a discussion on ...

Multiscale streamflow variability associated with El Niño/ Southern Oscillation

Streamflow responses to the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon in the tropical Pacific are detectable in many regions. During warm-tropical El Niño and cool-tropical La Niña episodes, streamflows are affected throughout the Americas and Australia, in northern Europe, and in parts of Africa and Asia. In North and South America, correlations between peakflow season streamflows and sea...

Distinguishing the Quasi-Decadal and Multidecadal Sea Level and Climate Variations in the Pacific: Implications for the ENSO-Like Low-Frequency Variability

Low-frequency sea level variationswith periods longer than interannual time scales have been receivingmuch attention recently, with the aim of distinguishing the anthropogenic regional sea level change signal from the natural fluctuations. Based on the available sea level products, this study finds that the dominant low-frequency sea level mode in the Pacific basin has both quasi-decadal variat...

“Intrinsic” correlations and their temporal evolutions between winter-time PNA/EPW and winter drought in the west United States

In this study, relations between winter-time Pacific-Northern America pattern (PNA)/East Pacific wave-train (EPW) and winter-time drought in the west United States over the period of 1951-2010 are analyzed. Considering traditional Pearson's Correlation Coefficient can be influenced by non-stationarity and nonlinearity, a recently proposed method, Detrended Partial-Cross-Correlation Analysis (DP...
